Top 5 Risk Management Strategies for Intraday Traders
Intraday trading offers exciting opportunities to profit from daily market volatility, but it can also deplete your trading capital rapidly if you lack a structured risk-management framework. The difference between successful traders and those who fail is rarely the accuracy of their entry signals—it is how they manage their risk.
1. The 1% Rule of Capital Protection
Never risk more than 1% of your total account value on a single trade. If you have a trading account of ₹1,00,000, your maximum loss on any single trade should not exceed ₹1,000. This ensures that a string of losses won't wipe out your account.
2. Always Use a Hard Stop Loss
A stop loss is an automated order placed with your broker to exit a position once it reaches a certain price. Never trade with a 'mental' stop loss. In fast-moving markets, price drops occur in milliseconds, and emotion will often hold you back from selling manually.
“Cutting losses quickly is the most important skill in trading. A stop loss is your ultimate line of defense.”
3. Maintain a 1:2 Risk-to-Reward Ratio
Ensure that your target profit is at least double your stop loss size. If you risk ₹500 on a trade, your profit target should be at least ₹1,000. With a 1:2 ratio, you only need to win 35% of your trades to remain profitable overall.
4. Establish a Daily Loss Limit
Decide on a maximum daily loss limit (e.g., 3% of your capital). If your losses reach this limit, close your terminal and stop trading for the day. This prevents 'revenge trading', which is the single biggest account-killer for retail traders.
