Understanding Candlestick Patterns: A Beginner's Guide

If you want to trade in the stock market successfully, learning how to read price action is one of the most critical skills you can develop. Candlestick charts are the preferred tool for professional traders worldwide because they pack a wealth of information into a single visual format.

What is a Candlestick?

A candlestick represents price action over a specific timeframe (e.g., 5 minutes, 1 hour, or 1 day). Each candlestick consists of a 'body' and two 'wicks' (or shadows). The body shows the range between the opening and closing prices, while the wicks show the highest and lowest prices reached during that period.

Green candlesticks represent bullish price action (where the close was higher than the open), and red candlesticks represent bearish price action (where the close was lower than the open).

“Price patterns are not guarantees of future direction; they represent the collective psychology of market participants in real-time.”

Top 3 Reversal Patterns to Know

  • Hammer Pattern: A bullish reversal pattern that forms during a downtrend, indicating that buyers successfully pushed the price back up after a sell-off.
  • Shooting Star: A bearish reversal pattern that forms at the top of an uptrend, showing that sellers rejected higher prices.
  • Engulfing Patterns: Bullish or Bearish engulfing patterns occur when a large candle completely consumes the body of the previous smaller candle, signaling a strong shift in momentum.

Learning to spot these patterns is only the first step. To increase your success rate, always look for confirmation—such as increased trading volume or key support and resistance levels—before placing a trade.
